Get rewards from your activity tracker

As our online worlds become ever more interconnected, so do the apps we use. Did you know you can connect your FitBit or other activity tracker to other apps and earn real world rewards – just for getting up and moving?

I personally have a FitBit, so I’m specifically writing about ways to get rewards by connecting your FitBit to other apps. However, other activity trackers can also be used with many of these rewards programs. Note: I’m not an affiliate of any of these companies. I’m not getting paid in any way for recommending these ideas. I just believe that rewards are a great way to get motivated to move!

Walgreens Balance Rewards Points

For anyone else who lives near a Walgreens store, this is a GREAT way to get rewarded for your tracked activity. In addition to points for purchases, Walgreens gives you 20 Balance Rewards Points for every mile you walk, run or bike. Plus there are bonus points for other healthy behaviors, such as weigh-ins, blood pressure tests, and blood sugar tests.

Learn more about the Balance Rewards Program, and check out all the apps and devices that can be used to earn rewards with Walgreens. I would like to point out that simply connecting MyFitnessPal is a way to earn rewards, so you can get points without even having an activity tracker. Do you use MyFitnessPal? Send me a friend request so we can cheer for each other!

To connect your FitBit to your Walgreens Balance Rewards account:

  1. Visit walgreens.com and sign up for a Balance Rewards Account (if you don’t have one).
  2. Log into your Walgreens Balance Rewards Account.
  3. Click on the Balance Rewards link near the top.
  4. Scroll down to the Your Healthy Activities box near the bottom, on the right.
  5. Click the Start Tracking Activity Now link.
  6. Click the Devices and Apps link (left side, under the Your Activity link).
  7. Click the View Health Devices and Apps link under the three connection steps.
  8. Scroll down to see two tabs, for Apps and Devices.
  9. From here, your steps will differ if you’re using a different tracker. To connect a FitBit, first click the Devices tab. Scroll down to find the FitBit model you use.
  10. When you click your FitBit model, a pop up will open. Assuming your FitBit is already active and tracking your daily steps, all you need to click in this pop up is the Connect button. This will take you to a FitBit authorization page.
  11. Click the pink Allow button. You’ll get a message confirming the connection.
  12. Get active and start earning points!

Once you have at least 5,000 points, you can redeem them for your first $5 reward, either in a Walgreens store or online. You can save up to 40,000 points for a $50 reward, but do keep in mind that rewards points expire after three years.

Earndit / Higi

These two recently combined to create a more powerful rewards system. You can use your tracked steps to earn points toward rewards like coupon codes and freebies from their brand partners. You also have the option to use your points to make a donation to their charity options, like toys for kids with cancer or programs to save shelter pets.

To get started with Higi:

  1. Visit higi.com and click the green Sign Up button.
  2. Enter your email address, and create a password
  3. Complete your profile info.
  4. When you get to the page to connect a device, choose the FitBit link.
  5. Follow the steps to connect your account.
  6. Be active, build up points, and redeem them for rewards.

The number of points needed varies by the reward or charity donation. You’ll need to log in to redeem your points once you have enough saved.

FitStudio

If you often shop at Sears or Kmart, you can use FitStudio to connect your activity tracker to your Shop Your Way account. While the rewards can be very valuable, they also expire quickly. My recommendation is to hold off on creating an account until you know you’re about to shop at Sears or Kmart (in store or online) because you can get up to 5,000 points in the process of creating your account, setting up your profile, and connecting your device. Once you have a FitStudio account, remember to check your rewards any time you’re headed to Sears or Kmart.

To get started with FitStudio:

  1. Visit shopyourway.com and click Join or Activate at the top.
  2. Create your Shop Your Way account.
  3. Visit fitstudio.com and click Sign Up at the top.
  4. Create an account using the same email and password as your Shop Your Way account. Your accounts will automatically be connected.
  5. On the Fit Studio site, mouseover Rewards at the top right, then click on Connect a Device. Follow the steps to connect your FitBit, and begin earning points for your activity.

Because most points expire in seven days, it can be difficult to rack up a big reward. However, even a small number of current points can get you a discount at Sears or Kmart, so be sure to check your points any time you shop at either of the two stores.
