Beware the Sugar Monster!

For anyone watching their carb intake, Halloween can be a truly scary event! Everywhere you look, there’s sugar, sugar, and more sugar! This is my advice for avoiding serious consequences from the sugar monster.

1. Don’t buy candy for trick-or-treaters until the very last minute. This helps in two ways – you’re less likely to find your favorites still in stock, and you can’t eat what you don’t have!

2. Allow yourself a treat, but plan for it. Do not just graze on the trick-or-treat bucket or just eat anything and everything your little spook got from the neighbors but doesn’t like.

3. Know what you’re going to have to do to burn the calories in the treat before you put it into your mouth. Is it really worth it to have to do 150 crunches to burn off one treat size Crunch bar? Are you willing to do 50 burpees just to eat one Snickers? Think before you eat!

4. Have a follow up plan. Chances are you’re going to eat something sugary on Halloween. Once you get a bit of sugar, you’ll crave more! Plan some really healthy meals for the following week. My favorite meal replacement shake often helps curb sugar cravings, making the week after Halloween a great time to join me in my seven-day Shakes and Salads Challenge. If you really blow it, you might consider doing a 3-day cleanse – but don’t do a juice cleanse! Try mine so you can eat some solid foods while resetting your digestive track.

No matter what happens this Halloween, don’t let it set you back. If you do lose the battle with the sugar monster, just get back on this health and fitness journey on Nov. 1. If you really blow it – or you want to actually lose some weight before Thanksgiving – you might want to join me for a round of 21 Day Fix. I’ll be starting that on Nov. 1 no matter how badly the sugar monster gets me!
